Mark Cuban Floats Run For President: Is He Presidential Material?

DANCING WITH THE STARS – Episode 502 – On week two of “Dancing with the Stars,” airing MONDAY, OCTOBER 1 (8:00Ð10:00 p.m., ET), eleven dance couples remain vying for the chance to be crowned champion of “Dancing with the Stars,” as some couples performed the Quickstep and others danced the Mambo. (ABC/CAROL KAELSON) MARK CUBAN, KYM JOHNSON

Mark Cuban recently took to the media to do an in-depth interview with the Fox News show “Objectified.” The conversation eventually turned to politics and he was questioned by host Harvey Levin about his political aspirations.

“We’re going into an era where people want someone who comes up with solutions. I think we’re going into a time where you need somebody who can connect to people and relate to people at a base level and appreciate what they’re going through — and I think I qualify on each of those,” Cuban stated.

Mark Cuban is not Donald Trump. Donald Trump built a multi-billion dollar business out of a million dollar loan from his father and has been on the front lines of movements related to equality (regardless of what the media will tell you) for decades.

Mark Cuban is a smart man too. I would also describe him as immoderately opportunistic as well, with a large dose of luck thrown in for good measure. He made a fortune from his deal with Yahoo worth 5.7 billion with the sale of his live streaming website, Broadcast.com, during the dot com bubble. Yahoo would regret the terrible deal which was one of the worst of that financial era.

Cuban has spent a lot of time in the public eye since then as the very controversial owner of the National Basketball Association’s Dallas Mavericks. Somewhat of a maverick himself, Cuban has repeatedly been fined by the league for controversial statements and actions. Some of his actions have been seen as a distraction to the franchise which has been one of the more successful in the league since he has assumed his role as one of the more hands on owners in the league. Many have speculated as to whether he would branch out to one of the other major American sports.

As a result of the fallout of the Bernie Madoff Scandal, the New York Mets of Major League Baseball suffered substantial financial losses which set off a bleak period for the franchise. Many Met’s fans had flooded the comments section of sports blogs around the internet calling for the sale of the team from the Wilpon family to Cuban. I however, was not one of them. I think that Cuban, although talented, would make a terrible baseball owner.

Baseball is an American institution and a sport where flash and big talk is usually met with a 98 mile per hour fastball aimed directly at the head of your star player. Mark Cuban, and his at times immature antics would get his players hurt.

There is also the question of American pride. Last year, he gave comments that seemed to support Colin Kaepernick in his kneeling during the national anthem controversy. He told CNNMoney:

“OF ALL THE WAYS YOU COULD PROTEST, YOU COULD THROW A BOMB, YOU COULD SHOOT A GUN, YOU COULD THROW A PUNCH, YOU COULD START A PROTEST, YOU COULD TRY TO START A RIOT, YOU COULD SHOOT SOMEBODY, HE TOOK A KNEE,”

“AND NOW HE’S STARTED A HUGE CONVERSATION ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AMERICAN, WHAT IT MEANS TO BE PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN, WHAT IT MEANS TO SALUTE THE FLAG, BECAUSE HE TOOK A KNEE.” – Mark Cuban

What it means to be proud to be an American? I’ll tell you what it means Mr. Cuban. It means that you do not grandstand and disrespect the legacy of American Armed Forces members. Those men and women have given, or risked their lives for the freedom you used to bilk Yahoo out of more money than the average American can ever dream of making.

In a lot of ways Cuban and Kaepernick are similar. Both continually put themselves above their respective teams and leagues. Is that the kind of man we want running the Country?

When asked about the possible presidential run Cuban said, “Considering, yes. Made a decision? Far from it,”

  1. Julio….your criticism of Cuban is ‘bush league’ to put it mildly. He’ actually built a successful business with tangible results, confirmed through his financials. Which is something DT has NOT done and avoided at all costs, and there’s a reason: DT is a pathological liar and a crook. It seems you’ve bought into one of his countless lies about how ‘uber’ wealthy he is and such a success. What he is is leveraged and has done so ‘privately.’ Hopefully, Mueller will cook him to maximum effect; time will tell.

Funny that you describe Cuban in light of his “immature antics” which he did display, but he’s grown up a great deal, a claim that DT can in no way make for himself. Cuban is articulate and very intelligent, where DT is neither and demonstrates this truth on a daily basis.

Cuban’s statement, you’ve quoted, was spot on and has been supported by a rising number of those in the military. In other words, and myself also speaking as a Vietnam veteran, what Kaepernick did with his ‘kneeling protest’ was respectful of those who have served and what this country represents which is ‘freedom’ of expression which seems to be an idea you’re struggling with. The flag was never intended to be wrapped up with as you as so many misguided minds have embraced, a kind of fanatical fervor that is seen in extreme religious dogma. The flag not only represents freedom but is a call to action of the very citizens who embrace its message to exercise judiciously and fairly. This is at the core of the ‘protest’ and is well understood. I’ve witnessed the flag being raised upside down, half mast, burned and displayed in other ways you may not approve of, but that’s the price of freedom for which the ‘country’ has fought for, not some fanatical allegiance to an absolute regimen of belief. BTW, if you research the US Code on how to address the flag, you’ll find the word ‘should’ (do an action) instead of ‘this is the only way to address the flag’ kind of wording. We also used to salute in the same way the Nazis did until 1942 when it was ‘suggested’ to place your hand over your heart.

What’s clear is that it’s the ‘intention’ of the person in how they would address any particular institution. There are peaceful means and the NFL players have done just that. It’s your allegiance to oppose any other way of thinking that invites the furtherance of bigotry and hate.

  2. Furthermore, Julio, your attempt at making Cuban out to be a slick crook is laughable and pathetic, especially when comparing him to DT who is a KNOWN crook, thief, and cheat whose reputation is so bad in NY, the banks avoid him. While Cuban’s passion for his team has been legendary in certain ways, it doesn’t define him as a person. As I said, he’s grown emotionally over the years and having listened to him in many interviews, including Bill Maher’s show, he continues to demonstrate his vast knowledge of the business world as well as his clear understanding of politics. Again, not something DT is capable of doing as the bar for DT is very low…

So, would Cuban be a serious consideration for running the country? Of course, he would and qualifies well beyond DT. He’s demonstrated, over the years, a level of competence which DT will never be able to aspire towards. It continues to amaze me that people like yourself, don’t seem to grasp what DT is really all about. With Cuban, you have someone who actually cares about the direction the country is going in, unlike DT who is just willing to bring in the most extreme, unqualified of people to fill cabinet positions and threaten to ruin our government. Pages could be written about this man’s gross ineptitude; perhaps you should interview those who’ve left the WH because of DT’s behavior.
