While lobbying for an ‘impartial’ investigation, Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad called last weeks horrific chemical attack a”100 percent fabrication” used to justify a U.S. air strike, news agency AFP reported Thursday.
He stated Syria’s military had given up all its chemical weapons in 2013 after an agreement made at the time, and would not have used them anyway.
The attack which took place on April 4th in the town of Khan Sheikhoun killed dozens of people and was the reason the United States to launched a cruise missile strike on a Syrian air base. This was the first instance of US aggression on the Assad government in the six-year-old conflict.
On Wednesday, Asaad’s top ally Russia vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution to condemn the attack and force the Syrian government to cooperate with investigators.
Samples tested from the location of the attack, Khan Sheikhoun, last week tested positive for the nerve agent sarin according to the British delegation at the global chemical weapons watchdog OPCW.
The US government has alluded to possible complicity from the Russian government in either executing or covering up the attack.
